Pain Management

Pain Management

Pain can be physically and psychologically debilitating and often difficult to treat. It often leads to erosion of confidence and low self-esteem. All this results in reduction of quality of life for the sufferrer.

At White Rose Medical Solutuions we use a range of therapies (please see below) and aim to effectively treat pain and improve the confidence and self-esteem for all of our patients.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been used in Chinese medicine for many thousands of years and in recent years has become popular in main stream Western medical practice. Acupuncture is used to relieve symptoms of some common physical and psychological conditions and has also shown to promote healing and the reparative processes of the body. It is effective for a wide range of painful conditions. However, it is commonly used to treat musculoskeletal pain, for example in the back, neck, shoulders and legs. It has also been successfully used in the treatment of headaches, migraines, chronic muscle strains, sports injuries, various kinds of rheumatic and arthritic pain as well as ‘trapped nerves’. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommends Acupuncture for migraines, back pain and osteoarthritis of the knees. Acupuncture is also used for a variety of non-painful conditions.

Acupuncture works by stimulating the nerves in the skin, muscles and other tissues, and can produce a variety of effects such as release of the body’s natural painkillers, such as endorphins and serotonin. This modifies the way pain signals are received by the brain with patients often noticing an improved sense of well-being following a treatment. Current research shows that Acupuncture can have effect on most of the systems of the body, examples include, the nervous system, muscle tone, hormone production, circulation, and allergic responses, as well as the respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems.

Each treatment is tailored to the individual patient’s needs, after undertaking a thorough consultation to determine the cause of the patients symptoms. A typical treatment involves fine needles being inserted through the skin and briefly left in position, sometimes with manual or electrical stimulation. The number of needles varies but may be only two or three. Treatment might be once a week to begin with, then at longer intervals as the condition responds and improves. A typical course of treatment lasts four to six sessions. Patients often notice significant improvement in pain after their first session.

Trigger Point Therapy

Many common painful conditions are due to problems with either muscles or facia. Often trigger points (muscle knots) develop in muscle and/ or facia, thereby causing pain along with reduction in physical function and mobility. Trigger point therapy has been shown to be effective in the release of these trigger points and help restore normal function and alleviate pain.
